Microdermabrasion FAQ's

Microdermabrasion is a common procedure and extremely safe.  Medical grade microdermabrasion gives the best results and you should always provide your full medical history. Also, be sure to follow any post-treatment instructions.

Some temporary redness and discomfort similar to a sunburn are common following treatment. Skin conditions such as acne may appear worse for a brief time.  Occasionally your skin may appear temporarily darker or lighter.

An advantage of microdermabrasion is there is no downtime. You may resume a normal routine and apply cosmetics immediately following your treatment.

Your skin will feel softer and look younger. Fine wrinkles will decrease over time due to the growth of new collagen. Brown spots or discoloration, uneven skin tone, acne, and acne scars are improved with the exfoliation.

You will be able to notice an immediate improvement. However, results will be more marked with multiple treatments. The degree of improvement can vary depending on your individual skin quality and the condition being treated.

Microdermabrasion should not be performed on someone with a recent viral infection, such as cold sores and shingles. Treatment with an anti-viral medication is recommended prior to the procedure in this instance.  Other conditions for which microdermabrasion is not recommended include: eczema, recent sunburns or rosacea, auto-immune disorders, a history of poor healing or excessive scarring such as keloid formation, or a history of diabetes. It is also not recommended with recent laser surgery in the treated area or recent Accutane use.

Microdermabrasion may cause mild discomfort, but does not require anesthesia. A feeling of tightness and heat are common effects and quickly fade.

Microdermabrasion works best for minor imperfections and overall skin improvement. Those with very large or dark spots, moderate to deep wrinkles, and serious scars should seek an alternative treatment.

You should not use Retin-A® or retinoid containing products, tanning creams, or tan in the sun for at least a week prior to your treatment.  While chemical peels may be performed in conjunction with microdermabrasion, do not have one before treatment.

Moisturizers and sunblock will be applied immediately after your treatment. You may use anti-inflammatory creams or cold compresses if necessary.  Do not irritate the treated skin with harsh chemicals or exposure to the sun for one week.   It is important that you follow a good skin care regimen after the procedure with consistent use of moisturizers and sunscreens as well.  You should contact your doctor immediately for any rare effects such as blistering, scabbing, or infection.
